Big Walk and Wheel is promoted by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust [registered charity no. 326550 (England and Cymru), SC039263 (Scotland) and 20206824 (Republic of Ireland)] (“The promoters”/ “we”).
The challenge dates are Monday 16 March – Friday 27 March 2026.
Schools can record active journeys for the challenge on the Big Walk and Wheel website from Monday 16 March 2026 to midday on Wednesday 15 April 2026. Journeys made before the start time or after the closing time will not count towards the challenge.
Any enquiry concerning this challenge should be sent to: bigwalkandwheel@walkwheelcycletrust.org.uk.
The promoters reserve the right to cancel this challenge at any stage, if deemed necessary, or if circumstances arise out of their control.
Big Walk and Wheel is open to all schools in the United Kingdom. A DfE/SEED/Inst number is required to complete registration and enable schools to participate.
Nursery schools can enter the Big Walk and Wheel challenge provided they have a DfE Number. If a nursery does not have a DFE number and wishes to take part, they should contact bigwalkandwheel@walkwheelcycletrust.org.uk.
Big Walk and Wheel has five categories for school-types, small primary (fewer than 70 pupils) medium primary (fewer than 250 pupils), large primary (greater than or equal to 250 pupils), primary and secondary school combined and secondary schools.
There is no separate category for SEN/ASN/ALN schools. However, a dedicated SEN/ASN/ALN leaderboard will be available, enabling these schools to view their position among other SEN/ASN/ALN schools while remaining included in the overall leaderboards.
Pupils with special educational needs, additional support needs, additional learning needs and/or disabled pupils may take active journeys to school which can count towards the school’s daily score. This can include walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling (using school/static/adapted cycles if required).
If a SEN/ASN/ALN pupil is unable to make an active journey to school then one active journey within the school day, that lasts 10 minutes or replaces a car journey counts in the challenge. These journeys must be logged as 'other active journeys'.
Participants can register as a whole-school. However, if the whole school can’t take part, schools can enter one class or year group into the challenge. If a school is registered as a whole-school, classes or year groups within the school are not permitted to register separately as a class.
The promoters are not responsible for misuse of any prize, or claims, liability, loss or damage arising out of or in connection with this scheme. The promoters have no knowledge of local conditions and it may be that as a result of those conditions, including but not limited to weather conditions, construction projects, closures or other events, routes used are not safe. Any schools, by registering to participate in Big Walk and Wheel, accept that it, or its representatives, must exercise judgment in their activities which result from participation in Big Walk and Wheel, and are responsible for decisions affecting the safety of pupils and other participants.
Schools are advised to check all their details on the Big Walk and Wheel website prior to the start of the challenge. If any information is incorrect, they should contact the challenge organisers (bigwalkandwheel@walkwheelcycletrust.org.uk) to amend the details prior to the challenge start date. Once the challenge has begun (16 March 2026) it will not be possible to amend the information given at registration. Incorrect details may lead to the allocation of the wrong category and a school/class not being eligible to claim any prizes.
The promoters aim to support schools during the challenge by providing them with Big Walk and Wheel-themed resources. However, we cannot be held liable if, for any reason, we are unable to provide these resources.
Organisations who promote Big Walk and Wheel are eligible to sign up for a Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel account for external promoters, giving them access to promotional resources, a tool to create leader boards for specific schools, and access to school homepages. However, this account does not give access to the details of school champions.
A school or class must log their active journeys to:
- receive a daily score which determines their position in the category at the end of the challenge
- appear on the daily leader boards
- be eligible to win in the daily prize draw
A school/year group/class may log one walking, wheelchair, scooting or cycling journey per pupil per day of the challenge. This should relate to the journey made to school each day. For those that park and walk/wheel or use public or school transport, their journey to school counts towards the challenge if any part of the journey is made on foot, using a wheelchair, scooter or cycle and lasts for 10 minutes or more.
If a SEN/ASN/ALN pupil is unable to make an active journey to school then one active journey within the school day, that lasts 10 minutes or replaces a car journey, counts in the challenge. These journeys must be logged as 'other active journeys'.
A school/year group/class entering into the challenge agrees to record journeys as accurately as possible within the rules outlined in these terms and conditions.
We encourage schools to record journeys on every day of the challenge, but their final position is determined by their best five days.
Active journeys must be logged by midday on Wednesday 15 April 2026.
The position of a school/year group/class at the end of the challenge is determined by their daily scores. Daily scores are calculated as the proportion of a school/year group/class who logs a walking/wheelchair/scooter/cycling journey that day and are given as a percentage. E.g. a school that has 100 pupils of which 60 walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on a given day will receive a daily score of 60%.
The overall winners of the challenge will be the school/year group/class with the highest average score of their best five days. The results are based on the data entered by the school/year group/class.
There are five overall categories in the 2026 challenge:
- small primary (1-69 pupils)
- medium primary school (70-249 pupils)
- large primary school (250+ pupils)
- primary and secondary school combined
- secondary schools
The top five schools on the leader boards for each of these categories will receive an exclusive framed Big Walk and Wheel 2026 certificate.
In the event of a tie, the schools at the top of the leader board will be declared joint winners.
The overall winning schools and final positions will be confirmed by 24 April. Details of the winning schools will be published on the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel website. However, we cannot be held liable if we are unable to meet this deadline.
The promoters will determine the winners of the challenge in accordance with schools’ performance. All such decisions will be final and binding.
